East Stroudsburg University is hiring a Temporary Public Health Assistant! Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to internships, careers and social activities. Just minutes from campus are the country’s largest water parks, scenic Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, Appalachian Trail, and other opportunities for recreational fun. 

As the Temporary Public Health Assistant, you will need to think creatively and be comfortable supporting the educational outreach program for Lyme disease and tick prevention. You will be an active member of the Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute team and will work closely with the Director to identify or report tick species using geospatial analysis technology and communicating this to the ESU Campus Community. You will thrive in this role if you like combining your public health or biology background and clerical experience skills all while serving as the primary point of contact to assist customers for the department. To be successful in this role, you must be self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented. 
 
Your normal hours will be Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but you may have to flex your schedule from time to time based on the needs of the business to be a true Temporary Public Health Assistant. This is a temporary full time grant funded role until 6/30/2026 contingent upon continued grant renewal.  The role requires up to 10% travel. When our team shows up for work, they are energized and motivated to succeed - all while being the most crucial piece to keeping the ESU operations humming. 

What Will I Do At ESU? (AKA Essential Duties)

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, marketing, and assessing educational programs, services, and events of the Research Institute including fairs, workshops, conferences, and seminars.
  • Assist with identifying stakeholders across the Commonwealth to implement tick prevention seminars to be delivered to the community and medical providers.
  • Manage customer walk-ins, e-mails, and phone calls with tick testing forms, taking payments, and answering advanced questions related to tickborne diseases and ticks.
  • Identifying tick species in North America and using computer software to report tick identification and receipt of specimens to customers.
  • Communicating with customers effectively on the ordering process, proper submission of samples, and result status.
  • Assist with ordering, tracking, and maintaining all inventory for office supplies and laboratory supplies.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update scientific content on all web pages in collaboration with web services for all ESU domains.

What We're Looking For (AKA Qualifications)

  • One year as a Clerical Assistant 2, moderately complex clerical experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Biology, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Able to read, write, and comprehend English; able to follow verbal instructions.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, Teams required.
